Sports
When
it comes down to sports the squadron doesn’t take any challenge lightly! Over
the past few years the squadrons sporting success at Wing level has definitely
left its mark wiping the trophy tables clean in both Athletics and Swimming and
providing key players in football, netball, rugby and hockey for the Wing,
Regional and Corps teams.
The
squadron is proud to have had both the Wing Male and Female Sports Cadets along with
the Wing Rugby and Athletics Captains and many representatives from all levels
amongst its cadets.
We
also have monthly sports nights down at the local leisure center where cadets
can earn points for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, learn new games, have
inter flight competitions and relax no matter what their ability or skill level.

Radio
The
squadron has its own radio communications room especially set up for those
wishing to earn their Operator's Certificate and finally the Radio Communicators Award,
talking to other squadrons
using the phonetic alphabet both in the
UK
and Overseas!
The
squadron currently has one cadet holding the hard earned radio communicators award with
several other cadets well on their way already holding their radio operators
certificates.
The
squadron also has handheld radios which are used for different
exercises on squadron nights and weekend activities. The exercises can be
anything from battleships to moving a team of cadets around an obstacle course,
but what ever they always provide good fun and leave cadets with something to
think about!

Modelling
For many years the squadron
has been making model aircraft and entering the Wing modelling competition and
winning awards through them. The squadron now has a dedicated modeling room
where cadets can make plastic models, chucky plans, remote control aircraft and
dioramas.

Community Service
The
squadron is highly involved within the local community serving the community - helping at the local
theatre and football ground with car parking and selling programs. Looking after
the community garden and local War Graves along with helping to raise money for
various charities in events such as the swimmathon, street collections for
the RAF Association and the Poppy Appeal. The squadron also helps with the local
riding for the disabled, cart racing and major horse trials and in an old
people’s home along with special projects.

Fund Raising
Fund
raising is one of the ways the squadron can afford to take cadets to activities
and competitions and supply all the high tech equipment such as flight
simulators. Fund raising events vary greatly from coffee mornings, bottle
tombolas and bag packs to treasure hunts, garden parties and sponsored events
such as the Vulcan Aircraft Pull and swimming the length of the British Channel in the
swimming pool.
