Duke of Edinburgh's Award

As one of the bigger squadrons in the A.T.C we also have one of the largest Duke of Edinburgh’s Award contingents especially at Gold level with the record for finishing time being held by our squadron members for the last 3 years!

With the majority of our cadets completing their Bronze level award and many more going on to complete their Silver award the expedition weekends always prove to be enjoyable and satisfying to the cadets along with the variety of community service and sports offered by the squadron.

Leadership Exercises

Being a part of the squadron is not only about having fun and making new friends it’s also about learning new skills. One of the ways the squadron does this is through leadership exercises. Giving every cadet the chance to build on there current leadership skills by leading a team of cadets through tasks using poles, ropes and drums. These exercises also provide cadets with some tough challenges, interesting solutions and lots of laughs as the situations unfold.

Orienteering

The squadron has its own orienteering courses as well as a mobile orienteering kit used at the local parks. Although it is mainly available during the summer months it does provide those more experienced with a challenge when done against the clock!

Running different events the squadron caters for all ability levels, training cadets in the basics of map reading right the way through to using code cards to find the markers. At weekend events different courses are set out with individual, pair and team competitions providing more challenges and team work for the cadets.

Climbing

The majority of the squadron climbing is done at an indoor climbing centre with qualified instructors, where different walls are available for the different abilities ranging from slab faces to rock style overhang faces and bouldering walls. At some of the activity weekends there is the opportunity to rock climb and abseil outdoors and get a real feel for the sport. Cadets learn how to put the harnesses on correctly and use the appropriate equipment including how to tie the special climbing knots and they can get help to improve their climbing techniques.

Canoeing

Much of the squadron canoeing is done at the activity weekends on the local reservoirs with qualified A.T.C staff so cadets can learn the basic stokes as well as having lots of fun and getting wet! It doesn't take long for you to progress from British Canoe Union 1 Star standard to 2 Star standard and even Instructor Level!
